President Bola Tinubu has launched the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) to help Nigerians deal with the impact of ending fuel subsidies by lowering energy costs.
The presidency said in a Friday statement that this initiative aims to transform Nigeria’s transportation sector by promoting the use of compressed natural gas (CNG). It targets introducing over 11,500 new CNG vehicles and converting 55,000 existing gasoline vehicles to use CNG kits.
The federal government believes this will also boost domestic manufacturing, local assembly, and job creation.
The comprehensive initiative will empower workshops nationwide to convert vehicles to use CNG, with a focus on mass transit and student transportation to immediately reduce costs. Workshops across all six regions will provide kits and train new staff, creating technical skill development and jobs.
Other goals are helping states acquire new CNG buses and deploy them through private operators, including asset financing programs. There will also be incentives for CNG production, distribution and use investments and partnerships. Training and technology transfers will support after-sales maintenance services and sustainable jobs.
The launch shows the administration’s commitment to a cleaner environment through reduced emissions and energy security by using domestic natural gas.
