Samsung recently revealed the highly anticipated Galaxy S23 series at its annual Galaxy Unpacked event, showcasing significant upgrades to the camera. While the pricier Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts the majority of these improvements, the gap in performance between it and the other two models has grown wider. The new 200MP ISOCELL sensor from Samsung drives the main camera on the Galaxy S23 Ultra, resulting in better night photography, more stable videos, more accurate and faster autofocus, and higher resolution images. But that’s just the beginning, there’s much more to uncover about the Galaxy S23 camera!”
Enhanced Night Mode Photography for Superior Image Quality
Samsung’s relentless pursuit to enhance low-light photography continues with the Galaxy S23 Ultra. Building on the success of the Galaxy S22 Ultra, the new 200MP main camera sensor combines 16 pixels into one larger pixel, resulting in more light capture. Although the pixel count may decrease, the 200MP capacity compensates for any potential impact.
Superior Optical Image Stabilization
The Galaxy S23 Ultra boasts improved video stabilization, with a wider optical image stabilization (OIS) angle that’s double that of the Galaxy S22 Ultra. This results in a wider frame capture and the ability to do a tighter crop, leading to more stable video footage.
Introducing the First 200MP Camera on a Samsung Galaxy Phone
The standout improvement with the 200MP sensor on the S23 Ultra is the elevated image quality, especially in terms of resolution. However, it is rare to require a 200MP image, as they require ample light due to the small size of the pixels, which are not grouped together. Samsung alleges enhancements in color rendering as well.
Improved and quicker auto-focus precision.
The autofocus system has also been enhanced, thanks to Samsung’s Super Quad Pixel technology, which utilizes the entire 200 million pixels of the new sensor to keep the subject in focus.
Galaxy S23 and S23+
The Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23+ models, which are more budget-friendly, don’t have the 200MP main camera like the Ultra version, but they still have some improvements. These mainly involve capturing photos and videos in low-light conditions.
8K video recording at 30 frames per second.
The main camera on the Galaxy S23 series is capable of 8K video recording at 30 frames per second, an improvement from its predecessor’s 8K at 24fps. The shooting angle in this mode has also increased to 80 degrees, offering a wider view and allowing for more to be captured in each shot.
Upgraded front cameras.
The three S23 models now feature 12MP front cameras that have improved low-light portrait capabilities. With the aid of AI, the camera separates the subject’s eyes, hair, and skin to produce a more precise bokeh effect, separating the person from the background. Additionally, the front cameras support Super HDR at 4K 60fps, providing greater color range in selfies.
Adaptive video stabilization
Samsung has added Adaptive VDIS, a feature that analyzes and divides movements and recognizes lighting conditions to stabilize the video effectively for the specific scene. We will need to test it to determine its effectiveness, so keep an eye out for our review to see it in action.
Clearer and more defined video in low-light conditions.
The Galaxy S23 series includes AI software that enhances the quality of video recording in low light. This AI, powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset present in all three models, reduces noise and enhances sharpness.
Introducing Astro Hyperlapse technology.
Astrophotography enthusiasts will be pleased to know that Samsung is launching a new camera feature, Astro Hyperlapse, in the S23 series. This feature simplifies the process of capturing star movements or trails by selecting the 300x option.
360-degree audio recording with the Galaxy Buds2 Pro.
Finally, Samsung enables 360-degree audio recording when the Galaxy Buds2 Pro is paired with the Galaxy S23. Note that this feature will also be available on the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4, and other upcoming Galaxy smartphones.
How many cameras does the Samsung Galaxy S23 have?
The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra is equipped with 4 cameras: a primary wide camera, an ultra-wide camera, a telephoto with 3x zoom, and a telephoto with 10x zoom. The Galaxy S23 and S23+ do not have the 10x telephoto camera. All three models have a front-facing camera located in the center at the top of the screen.
What is the megapixel count of the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S23?
Camera | Galaxy S23 Ultra | Galaxy S23+ | Galaxy S23 |
---|---|---|---|
Main camera | 200MP | 50MP | 50MP |
Ultra-wide camera | 12MP | 12MP | 12MP |
3x telephoto camera | 10MP | 10MP | 10MP |
10x telephoto camera | 10MP | N/A | N/A |
Front-facing camera | 12MP | 12MP | 12MP |
The Galaxy S23 Ultra stands out with its powerful 200MP main camera and 10x zoom, while the S23 and S23 Plus have 50MP cameras with 3x zoom capabilities that are still noteworthy.
