GrammarlyGo is a new tool being introduced by Grammarly, which will use generative AI to enhance communication. While Grammarly already checks spelling and grammar, GrammarlyGo will use personal, organizational, and situational context to assist in crafting messages for email, social media, and long-form communication. This tool will be available to most Grammarly users in April.
Poor communication can have various negative effects, as noted by Rahul Roy-Chowdhury, Grammarly’s global head of product. These effects include relationship erosion, hindering business growth and results, and slowing feedback loops that waste time. In addition, the company’s research with The Harris Poll found that poor communication can cost US businesses up to $1.2 trillion annually, or $12,506 per employee. The full report can be accessed here.
With GrammarlyGo, users can expect their messages to sound more professional and appropriate for their intended audience. For instance, if one uses GrammarlyGo to write an interoffice message to their work team, the tool will make suggestions based on personal, organizational, and situational context to enhance the message.
GrammarlyGo provides suggestions to improve, simplify, or shorten a message, as well as adjust the tone for various situations. Users can also create their own prompts to meet their specific needs.
In addition to helping with writing prompts, GrammarlyGo can also generate outlines or ideas that can be incorporated into messages or used as reference points. To overcome writer’s block, the tool also offers one-click prompts to assist users.
Rahul Roy-Chowdhury stated that by incorporating new technologies such as generative AI, Grammarly can move closer to its goal of supporting the entire process of writing, from idea generation to comprehension.
Following the introduction of OpenAI’s ChatGPT in late 2022, numerous tech companies such as Microsoft, Google, and Snapchat have revealed AI chatbot tools capable of generating messages and ideas. However, these tools do not appear to consider context when creating content, unlike GrammarlyGo.
Generative AI is a broad term used to describe AI technology that can generate various forms of content such as text, images, video, audio, and code, according to Techopedia. Contextual AI, as defined by Symbl.ai, can analyze cultural, historical, and situational aspects of data to make the most appropriate decision. By understanding context and tone to some extent, GrammarlyGo appears to be a basic form of contextual AI in addition to being a generative AI.
Based on Grammarly’s claims, GrammarlyGo has some understanding of situational context, allowing it to generate customized communication for various situations. However, users must provide specific information such as tone and level of formality to GrammarlyGo to ensure that it generates the appropriate message. Although the tool may not be able to respond appropriately on its own, it can differentiate between formal and informal responses if given the necessary information.
GrammarlyGo will be available on several other Grammarly products, including Grammarly Premium, Business, Education, and Grammarly for Developers. Additionally, some users of Grammarly Free in specific markets will have access to GrammarlyGo.
